Reykjavk - Next Door to Nature

One of the things that Reykjavk has over other neighboring capitals is its proximity to beautiful, pristine nature. Iceland is a young land, a land that is still in the process of being formed. The story that may be read from the city's geological stratum spans over 2.5 million years. This article will discuss some of the more interesting spots in Reykjavk and vicinity.

SKJUHL
skjuhl is a symmetrical hill dotted with boulders created during the Ice Age from dolerite. On the top of the hill are five large thermal-water tanks arranged in a circle, and resting atop them is the Perlan restaurant with its magnificent, panoramic view of the city. Throughout the hills of skjuhl, much of it tree-covered, are walking and jogging paths. There are at least 135 plant species in the area, along with birch and conifer trees, all home to many birds. There are also numerous relics from the Second World War around skjuhl, as Iceland was occupied by the British in May 1940.

VIEY ISLAND
Viey is a lovely island just offshore of Reykjavk, and an ideal spot to explore nature. There is also a fine restaurant on the island in an old, refurbished house. It only takes five minutes to get there by boat, which operates daily. Viey was first inhabited in the 10th century. In 1226 a monastery in the Order of Augustine was consecrated there. Viey monastery lasted until 1539, and was one of Iceland's main cultural centers. The buildings on the island are the oldest in Reykjavk. The church was consecrated in 1774. Viey is covered with vegetation, and has 156 species of plants. One of the island's charms is its birdlife, of which there are about 30 species. The beach around the island is quite beautiful, and in good weather a day on Viey leaves one with unforgettable memories.

ELLIARDALUR
One of Reykjavk's best-kept secrets is Elliardalur, a valley with one of the best salmon fishing rivers in Europe. The area's oldest geological stratum is two million years old, and the valley has prominent remains from the Ice Age when seawater moved in behind receding glaciers to create a fjord. Five thousand years ago a major eruption occurred in the mountains above Reykjavk, which destroyed the trees in Elliardalur. Thermal water, which is pumped up and utilized, is found about 1000 meters below the surface in Elliardalur.

The valley has a lovely variety of about 160 species of plants. A great number of trees have been planted in Elliardalur, so finding shade and shelter is an easy matter indeed. There are also fine walking trails throughout the valley, excellent for nature walks, jogging or simply strolling. Just above Elliardalur is rbr Outdoor Museum where one can see the history of Reykjavk, and become familiar with working methods from days of yore. Among the exhibits are old houses, boats and other links with Reykjavk's past. A good walk from the museum is the rbr Thermal Baths and Pool, considered an especially beautiful facility, and particularly popular with youngsters.

HEIMRK
One of the most beautiful places in the vicinity of Reykjavk is Heimrk, about 10 km from the city. It is an especially fascinating area, in particular because of the picturesque lava formations, some of which dates back 1000 years. There is also a thick cover of vegetation and moss that changes color according to the light and weather. Reforestation has been going on in Heimrk for years, and today trees thrive in the area. There are also about 150-160 species of plants.

Heimrk is a paradise for birdwatchers, and it is easy to approach birds for close observation. A total of about 60 species have been sited in the area, of which 30 nest. On the fringes of Heimrk is Elliarvatn, a peaceful trout lake that is very popular among fishermen. A walking trail has been made in and around Heimrk, making for easy, relaxed movement through the area. There are also a number of interesting nature highlights above Heimrk.

ESJA
The pride of Reykjavkers is Mt. Esja, towering over the city from across the bay. While it majestically stands 914 m (2,998 feet) above sea level, it is a relatively easy walk to the top. There is an excellent trail up the mountain from where the view is simply magnificent. City bus 20 can be taken to the foot of Esja where the trail begins. When one has returned to the base, a good idea is to take the bus to nearby Kjalarnes thermal baths and pool, and let the hot water soothe those tired muscles.

MUSEUMS IN REYKJAVK
Everyone interested in getting a closer insight into Icelandic nature should visit the Natural History Museum, located at Hlemmur 5 in Reykjavk, next to the Hlemmur Bus Terminal. Then there is Reykjavk's outdoor activities area at Laugardalur, with its Botanical Gardens where 300-350 species of Icelandic plants can be viewed, and the Farm Zoo where wild animals and farm animals are on display, or just roaming around.
