DATELINE ICELAND
December 13, 2005

Mirror, mirror on the wall...

who is the fairest one of all? The Icelander is, of course. OK, so we're a little biased around here - but we tend to think Iceland is home to some of the most beautiful people in the world. We're not sure if it's a diet of free-range lamb and fish caught in cold North Atlantic waters, the natural purity of Iceland's air and water, or Iceland's favorite health food, skyr, but it's something. Here's a little more fuel for the fire if you're not convinced: The 2005 Miss World, Unnur Birna Vilhjálmsdóttir, who was crowned by popular vote this past Saturday, just became the third Miss World for Iceland for little Iceland.

The 55th annual pageant was broadcast on Saturday December 10., to an estimated two billion viewers in 207 countries who were invited to vote by text message. A panel of nine former Miss Worlds then chose Miss Iceland as overall winner of the contest, which was held in China.

Unnur is a law student during the school year, a policewoman in the summer and an equestrian year-round. She follows former Icelandic Miss World winners Hólmfríður Karlsdóttir (1985) and Linda Pétursdóttir (1989) in ascending to the crown. Unnur's mother, Unnur Steinsson, is a former Miss World contestant herself. This latest result means that, in a nation of 300,000 people, one out of every 50,000 Icelandic women has won Miss World. We keep telling you: Iceland is hot.

By Popular Demand

We at Dateline are overwhelmed at how many people downloaded the free single "Murr Murr" by Icelandic artist Mugison with the last issue, so we're doing it again. This time we're offering you two music videos by Mugison that were chosen based on your requests. Technology buffs will be able to download both videos to their iPods.

"Screaming Murr Murr" is the video for the song thousands of readers downloaded with our last edition, and is now available by clicking here.

The second video from Mugison available for free download is called "2 birds." The song and video are about Mugison traveling around the world on tour and missing his wife. The woman he loves remains with him in his music, however, and is represented in the video: a picture of her face is projected on his guitar as he sings.

We'll keep bringing you what's new in arts and entertainment from Iceland, you just keep tuning in.
