SPA CITY REYKJAVK - an ideal destination for senior citizens

Traveling has become an important part of the lives of senior citizens. There are few activities more pleasurable than staying at new and interesting places where one can drink in culture, visit fine eateries and simply enjoy what life has to offer. And such visits are that much more enjoyable when there is the opportunity to improve one's health, relax and return home fresher in body and soil. One such place where all of the above can be found is Reykjavk, Iceland.

Robust Icelanders
The reason that the travel industry is beginning to focus on Reykjavk for those wishing to enjoy life while improving their health, is due to research showing that Icelanders are among the healthiest people on earth. They are in first place in regard to health, life expectancy and low mortality rates compared with other European countries. The average life expectancy in Iceland is 81.5 years for women and 77 for men. And mortality rates for those who have had coronary thrombosis is lowest among Icelandic men and next lowest among Icelandic woman, according to research conducted for WHO (World Health Organization) among 18 nations. The rate of coronary diseases has declined in Iceland by about 50% over the past 20 years, and the life expectancy of Icelanders who have contracted several types of cancer - for example, breast, cervix, prostate and thyroid cancer - is greater than that in Europe. In addition, strokes are a less serious disease in Iceland than in any other Western country. There is also an interesting piece of research conducted in 39 places in Europe, USA, Australia and New Zealand concluding that allergies are much less common in Iceland.

Why is Iceland among the healthiest nations on earth?
There are many reasons for this, but while we still do not know precisely why, there are several known factors. Icelanders enjoy a health-care system of the highest quality, which places emphasis on preventative medicine and testing, for example, mammography. There is also very little pollution in the country, in large part due to thermal spring water used for space heating in Reykjavk that makes for cozy indoor temperatures and a clean, outdoor environment. In addition, the city's drinking water is unbelievably pure and food in Iceland is generally fresh and additive-free - a key part of the national diet is fish. Just outside the city is Icelandic nature at her boldest, where there are numerous opportunities to enjoy healthy, outdoor activities. Finally, Reykjavk is a small city with a big heart and a low crime rate. All these factors add up to make Reykjavk a particularly interesting destination for senior citizens.

The magic of thermal water
An important part of well-being in Iceland is the result of thermal spring water, which has wonderful, medicinal effects on body and soul alike. There are seven thermal pools and baths in Reykjavk, and it's difficult to imagine a more beneficial activity for senior citizens than to swim and relax in a thermal environment. All movements in the water are easier and more leisurely as the thermal water relaxes and soothes stiff joints and muscles, and gentle movements in hot water strengthen the heart and lungs. Another interesting aspect of thermal water is the positive effect it has on reducing stress. Most of the city's thermal pools and baths are outside, and the combination of hot water and fresh, clean air has a fulfilling effect on one's overall well-being. In addition to all this, the thermal pools and baths are an excellent place to meet Icelanders. If you want to meet Brits, you go to a pub; if you want to meet the French, you go to a coffee house; but if you want to meet the people of Reykjavk, you go to one of the city's thermal pools and baths.
