Green Reykjavk

Anyone hearing the the name Iceland would hardly imagine that it was a place that had much vegetation. But upon closer look the Gulf Stream passes close by the country, making for mild winters. Visitors to the capital marvel at how green it is with beautiful gardens displaying diverse plant life. One of the main characteristics of the city of Reykjavk is its clean air, in part the result of geothermal water being used for space heating. This natural energy source is also used to heat commercial as well as private greenhouses, many of which are in small gardens providing homeowners with varieties of colorful vegetation year-round. Reykjavk's population is 108,000, and the city operates 17 public parks and gardens for the people to enjoy. There are several varieties of trees in the city, including birch and Alaska poplar, and perennials are more common in Reykjavk than in neoighboring countries. Visitors interested in gardening and vegetation should definately not miss the opportunity to visit Reykjavk's Botanic Garden in Laugardalur Valley, where 4000 varieties of plants are displayed including 350 Icelandic varieties.

Laugadalur Valley is also the center for outdoor activities in Reykjavk: there is a thermal swimming bool and bath, and Farm Zoo where wild and domestic Icelandic animals roam. The Valley also has a number of athletic stadiums, a coffee house and a family fun park with plenty to do for youngsters. Laugadalur is an ideal place to spend a day with the family, where a variety of fun activities are balanced by an overwelming atmosphere of peacefulness.

In the vicinity of Reykjavk is nature at her best, with mountains, hills, rivers and lava just waiting to be explored. And along the coast one can view an interesting variety of birdlife against a backdrop of fishing vessels at sea. Reykjavk is a city of nature, as well as a city of fun and culture offering a variety of diverse possibilities expected of a modern capital. Yet it is unique in its own very special way.
