At Sea with Reykjavk Excursions The Sightseeing & Excursion People

Reykjavk Excursions provides a window to the wonders of Iceland. For over 30 years the company has been guiding travelers to these wonders in the most exciting, interesting and relaxing way possible, while growing into the largest organizer of day trips in Iceland. Reykjavk Excursion's whale watching tours and nature watching tours have been gaining popularity in recent years, and for good reason. The following is a brief description of what one can expect.

Whale Watching Tours
Snfellsnes is a peninsula in west Iceland situated between Faxafli bay and Breiafjrur fjord. It is an area known for its varieties of exotic beauty, including towering mountains, the most famous of which is cone-shaped Snfellsjkull glacier (4500 ft). The coastline around the peninsula is as varied as it is spectacular, with long, sandy beaches, incredible craggy bluffs, caves, bird cliffs, rhyolite mountains, expansive lava fields, volcanoes, geothermal heat and mineral springs. There are few places, if any, that are better suited as a home base for whale-watching tours than Snfellsnes peninsula. Every year from early June through August there's an almost guaranteed certainty of spotting the largest animal on earth there, the magnificent blue whale. Many other types of whales are also often seen in these waters.

On our daily whale-watching cruises we'll be keeping a sharp lookout for the biggest of the big whales: the blue whale, humpback whale and even some finback whales. And on these trips we are also treated to the spectacular beauty of Snfellsjkull glacier standing majestically against an Arctic sky.

Nature Watching Tours
Breiafjrur fjord is a natural paradise, with amazing varieties of birdlife and landscapes. It is said that the islands and skerries of Breiafjorur are innumerable, and there is much truth to this due to the ebb and flow of tides. In previous times many of the islands were inhabited, but today most are deserted, making for ideal nesting sites for birds. Stykkishlmur is the largest town along the fjord, and an important communications center. It has been a key trading center since 1597, and many old, restored houses provide the town with a lovely charm. Stykkishlmur's excellent harbor facilities are home-base to Kynnisferir's nature excursions around the beautifully peaceful islands of Breiafjorur fjord.

Our regular nature-watching cruise takes us around the southern islands of Breiafjrur where we'll observe a fantastic variety of bird life, including puffins, eider ducks, kittiwakes, fulmars and the white-tailed eagle. We sail through tidal currents, see some very strangely shaped cliffs and enjoy the exhilarating peacefulness of entering a world of wildlife thriving in its own natural environment. A high point of the trip is when we cast-out a small net and fish for some shellfish delicacies. When the net is hauled in everyone gets the chance to taste shellfish and sea-urchin roe that just doesn't get any fresher.

The vessel we use on this voyage is a Catamaran type, specially outfitted for festive gatherings. Catamarans have several advantages over vessels with traditional hulls, including:

  • They are designed so that two hulls are joined together by a superstructure. The vessel is thereby much wider than standard ships, providing considerably more stability which makes for very smooth sailing.
  • Passenger facilities are up on the superstructure. The design provides for a spacious room that stretches across the vessel, surrounded by large windows for a great panorama.
  • The ship's wide bow makes it possible for many passengers to simultaneously enjoy being at the forward end of the vessel, and the main deck is high above water which greatly improves visibility.
